Community garden changes face
The Garden
The Brant/Brantford Roundtable on Poverty has been working for months to announce that we have begun planting community gardens in the Brantford Area. Our public use site is ready to go at 237 Mohawk St in Brantford.
With this community’s support including a great number of businesses, private citizens and organizations we have begun planting! The Roundtable would like to create further interest in this project and make an appeal to businesses, governments, and community members to help us secure the resources needed to keep this project successful and sustainable.
More items such as Storage Sheds, Vehicles, Picnic Tables, a Gazebo/Canopy, Chairs, Gardening Tools, Wheelbarrows, Seedlings, Seeds, Volunteers and Financial Assistance and ideas are needed and encouraged.
The Brant/Brantford Community Garden Project has undergone a change in direction since 2009. A new Project Manager, Sarah Gill from Grand River Community Health Centre, will be working with a new Advisory Committee to help the project with sustainable growth and organizational development.
The community will have the opportunity to take the leadership in establishing, running and sustaining gardens in Brant, Brantford and Six Nations in 2010 and the future.
The Brant/Brantford Community Garden Project will act as a resource, funding allocator, tool-kit developer and consultant for community/neighbourhood garden sites.
Community gardens will be volunteer led and managed at the local level to encourage sustainability and community capacity building.
The Brant/Brantford Community Garden Project would be made up of a network of community gardens and will work with the municipality and community organizations to manage the success of these sites.

The Brant/Brantford Community Garden Project was created in 2009 through the initiative of community members and organizations such as the Poverty Roundtable, Ojistoh House, Aboriginal Health Centre, Brant Native Housing and Grand River Community Health Centre. Other supporters and donors included: Direct Current Renewable Energy Systems, Nichol’s Florist, Total Rentals, The Albert Group, Brantford Parks and Recreation, USW local 1-500, Brantford Labour Council, Grand Erie Teacher Federation, Community Resource Services, Brant NDP, Community Living, Woodview Children’s Mental Health and Autism Services and St. Leonards and many individual and anonymous donors from all sectors.
A site was established at 237 Mohawk Street on the corner of Mohawk and Birkett Lane. This site, named Hazelwood, was available to community members from June to October 2009.
Approximately 200 community members used the garden during the year and 2000lbs of food was donated to local food providers. Another 1000lbs of food was harvested directly for garden volunteers.
The Hazelwood Garden has become the catalyst to create more community gardens through out Brantford. The Project sincerely thanks that private land owner for their partnership. Moving into 2010 the Hazelwood site will no longer be a garden and is not for public use.
New Developments
A community garden open to the public will be supported by the Project at Friendship House at 452 Grey Street, Brantford. Plots will be available for the general public as well as community organizations or businesses that are interested in sponsoring a plot. More information coming soon!
Princess Elizabeth School has also begun development on a community garden that will be created and maintained by their students. They are looking for help during the summer months when the students are on break.
